Simple Solutions To Complex Issues: The Greatest Dead Milkmen Song?
I can go years without hearing a Dead Milkmen song, or I can obsessively play nothing but for days at a time. Musically, are they any good? The word “sloppy” is casually tossed around. Lyrically, they can be razor sharp, sneaky-sly-sarcastic, and politically poignant, and they’re the one band that I’m more often to look up the lyrics than not.
I recognize that some of their songs really don’t hit with some people. As someone who has tried my hand {and failed} at writing satire {multiple times}, I’ll happily take the good with the bad, and, truthfully, I’m not always certain which is which. Sometimes it’s ugly where music meets art.
They’ve also been pushing hard themes, usually with a catchy tune, since the ’80s, so some specific word choices in the back catalogue have passed their expiration date even if the motifs are cuttingly current. Again, sometimes it’s hard to separate still-current satire from forty-year-old phrasing. Fair warning.

Yeah, so. Not to get all Larry Talker Tunes here on DBP, but I’ve been listening quite a bit to their 2023 album Quaker City Quiet Pills. It’s, ummm, it’s clearly a punk album {“I just wanna make America great / So I think of Don Jr when I masturbate“} but I’m pretty sure the world could use a few more punk albums and a lot less bullshit right now.
All talk of the all-time greatest Dead Milkmen song aside, if you have the energy to listen to one song off of QCQP – a proper listen – then give Philadelphia Femdom a spin. It’s solid.
